The Alchemist

As soon as I decided to write something about books, the first one came to my mind is ‘The Alchemist’. I am sure that many of you have read the book already. Even that minority people who have not yet read the book would have at least heard of it.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is such a book that you would never like to miss it.   The allegorical story of Santiago’s travel in search for the treasure would definitely inspire lot of us to search for our destiny.

All through the story, Paulo speaks through various characters. In my view the alchemist was none but Paulo himself. There are lots of things to be learned all through the books from all the characters.

From the protagonist Santiago, the shop keeper who offers him job, the Englishman who was in pursuit of alchemy, the Camel driver, the caravan head, the King of Oasis, the lady love he found in Oasis, the priest and the robber who ultimately reveals the place where the treasure actually is.

All through the book you can find the sayings that help you realize the world and life around you. There goes the very famous saying in the book through the King of the Oasis,

When you really want something, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

This is the advice given to Santiago that makes Santiago continue his pursuit for the treasure. When we see this from our pint of view, Paulo says, if you really want something, – whatever it is whether some good job, promotion, better life – you will get it. The whole universe will help you to get it. Only thing you need to do is to work towards it. Come what may; never stop working towards your goal – your destiny.

When the robber reveals the actual place of treasure, Paulo tells us that, sometimes we search for wealth, pleasure all through the world, but we do not realize that it actually in our door step. If we become conscious of this all the worries would be gone. But unfortunately, we need someone else to make us understand it.

The desert girl and the owner of crystal shop represent the distractions we face in the search of destiny. In both the time Santiago first think of leaving the treasure behind only to realize he can still get these even after found the treasure. But once he leaves the pursuit of destiny it would be gone forever. Here again, through Santiago’s mind and through the girl, Paulo tells us, never lost to distraction while in search for the destiny.

Some other quotes from the book,

If you start out by promising what you don’t even have yet, you’ll lose your desire to work toward getting it.

You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.  If he abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love.

People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them.

When you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.

This is the book you should not miss it. If you have not yet read, make sure it is the next book you read, you will never regret it.
